What is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram is a test used to record the electrical signals of your brain using small metallic discs that are attached to your scalp. The brain cells will communicate with each other using electric pulses. The brain activity will show up on the EEG as waves. EEGs are used to diagnose conditions like:

  • Brain tumours
  • Stroke
  • Sleep disorders
  • Brain damage
  • Seizure disorders, including epilepsy,
  • Dementia
  • Encephalopathy
Preparation for an EEG
  • Do not eat or drink anything with caffeine, like coffee, black tea, or energy drinks, for eight hours before the test.
  • Use your hair wash the night before the EEG. Do not use a hair conditioner or any styling products afterward.
  • Follow your health care provider’s instructions, including changing medicines.
Procedure for the EEG
  • You will lie on the bed and a technician will keep 20 small sensors on your scalp with glue.
  • You will be asked to relax and sleep.
  • You may look at bright lights or breathe differently to see if your body has changed during the activation process.
  • It is rare to have a seizure during a test.
  • During the EEG, the technician will record for 23 minutes and strive to obtain at least a portion of drowsiness or sleep.
  • In some cases, you may be sent home with an EEG device that will send the data directly back to your doctor’s office.
After EEG
  • The technician will take off the electrodes and wash off the glue that held them in place. You can use nail polish remover to remove the leftover glue.
  • You can usually start taking medications you’d stopped specifically for the test.
Risk factors for EEG

Although EEG is safe and painless, if you have a seizure disorder, there may be a slight risk that the flashing lights and deep breathing on the EEG may cause a seizure. The other reasons may depend on the medical condition.

  • Low blood sugar is caused by fasting
  • Light, especially a bright or flashing one
  • Sedatives
  • Oily hair in the presence of hair spray
