What is 2D echocardiology?

2D echocardiography is a non-invasive investigation used to evaluate the functioning and assessing sections of your heart. 2D echocardiography is used to evaluate the images of the heart by sound vibration to find any damage or blockages in the heart. This 2D echo can observe the beating heart, showing chambers, valves, and the major blood vessels of the heart.

What is detected in 2D Echo?
  • Size of heart chambers
  • Volume or the thickness of walls.
  • Valve function
  • Heart functioning
  • Pericardial effusion
The procedure for 2D echocardiology

The patient should lie down on the bed, and a gel is applied to the patient’s chest area to allow for specific views of the heart. To better capture the images, the person performing the 2D echo may ask the patients to breathe slowly and hold it for a few seconds.

The procedure will take up to 20 minutes. This test cannot give any information about heart blockages. An echo test can image the heart’s structure, including size, shape, thickness, infections, and so on. With the thickness of the ventricles, this 2D echo test can detect the risk of high blood pressure. The heart muscles weaken as a result of the damage caused by a heart attack. The 2D echo is not painful, but it does feel like a light pressure.
